I was watching the movie "War Room" not too long ago and noticed something that disturbed me. I noticed that the main character was continually addressing the devil and even rebuking him. I have also noticed several people do this on their Facebook, so I thought it would be a good idea to address this issue. By the way, the purpose of this is not to condemn the movie or those who watch it; we watched it and enjoyed it. The purpose of this post is to encourage other Christians to face the devil in a biblical way.
In the book of Jude, the bible tells us that there once was a dispute between the devil and the archangel Michael over the body of Moses. We find in Jude 9 that even Michael "durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee". If Michael the archangel who has more power in his pinky finger than we could ever hope for didn't rebuke the devil, what gives us this authority? We should follow his example and allow the Lord to rebuke the devil for us!
So how do we stand against the devil? In the book of James, we are instructed to RESIST the devil and then he will flee (James 4:7). Notice it did not say to rebuke him. How do we resist the devil? Maybe we should follow Christ's example. When the devil tempted Jesus, He only answered him with the Word of God! When the devil or one of his cohorts tempts you, DO NOT rebuke him, but RESIST him!!! Know your bible and you will have all the ammunition you need!
Why is all of this important? The devil is much more powerful than you or I. Left to your own defenses, He will devour you (I Peter 5:8). Thank God I have someone that lives within me that is greater than the devil! Let Him fight the devil. Let Him rebuke the devil. Pray to Him. Know your bible. RESIST the devil and he will flee!
“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
